Five Easy Daycare Kindness Activities Inspired by Little Mike the Ant™
Daycare and preschool teachers do not need a complicated curriculum to help young children notice when someone needs a hand. Everyday storytime, shared play and small conversations give children opportunities to practice listening, language, collaboration and caring choices. The free Little Mike the Ant™ Reading & Kindness Activity offers a short original story, The Helpful Leaf, that can become a low-preparation classroom routine.

Go to the free Little Mike the Ant™ Education Resource Directory → The directory brings together the story, mini-book, 20 teaching cards, daycare guide and optional books in one place.
1. Read: “Would you like help?” (5 minutes)
Read Little Mike and the Helpful Leaf aloud. Little Mike notices that a friend has lost a leaf needed for a picture. He asks a simple question, listens and helps search. Ask: “How did his friend feel?” and “What words did Little Mike use?” Younger children can point to a picture or act out asking for help, rather than answering in full sentences.
2. Leaf Helpers: a cooperative search (3 minutes)
Cut two or three large paper leaf shapes using safe classroom materials and place them where children can see and reach them. Invite children to take turns finding a leaf and bringing it to the shared picture-making area. Say “We found it together.” For toddlers who may put small objects in their mouths, skip loose small materials entirely; let them point to a large paper leaf instead.
3. Kind Words Role-Play (4 minutes)
Invite a teacher or puppet to model these lines: “Would you like help?”, “Can I have a turn?”, and “Thank you.” Children may respond verbally, gesture, or choose a matching picture. Model listening to “No thank you,” too; helping includes respecting someone's preference. Keep the activity positive and optional rather than singling out a child.
4. One Word, One Picture (4 minutes)
Choose three cards from the free 20 Little Mike the Ant™ vocabulary and kindness flashcards. Try help, friend, and smile. Say the word, use it in a sentence, and invite a drawing or physical action. For older children, add sequencing words: first, next and last.
5. A Kindness Leaf to Take Home (4 minutes)
Give children a blank paper leaf or space on a worksheet to draw a safe way they might help someone at home. A teacher can write down a child's dictated explanation, without attaching names to any publicly shared artwork. Families can ask: “What did Little Mike do to help?” and then think of one small caring choice for the day.
