- Talk & understand: answer five age-appropriate questions about the characters and choices.
- Kindness & creativity: choose a safe helpful action and draw or describe a new ending.
⏱️ Ready-to-Use 20-Minute Activity Plan
Minutes 0–3 · Welcome: Say hello to Little Mike the Ant™. Ask, “What does it mean to be a helpful friend?”
Minutes 3–8 · Read together: An adult reads Little Mike and the Helpful Leaf while children listen and picture the scene.
Minutes 8–12 · Story talk: Invite children to answer the five comprehension questions. Accept spoken, drawn or assisted answers.
Minutes 12–15 · Word play: Point out story words, clap syllables and invite children to describe what they notice.
Minutes 15–20 · Kindness challenge: Each child thinks of one safe helpful action. Close with a drawing or a one-sentence new ending.
🍎 Adapt for Different Learners
Daycare / Pre-K: read aloud, point to objects, use gestures, ask 1–2 questions and draw instead of writing. Kindergarten–Grade 1: identify story order, match words to pictures and dictate or write a sentence. Older or confident readers: ask for evidence from the text and a beginning-middle-end retelling. Allow movement breaks and accessible communication formats as appropriate.
🤝 Kindness Circle & Family Extension
Invite children to explain how Little Mike offered help and how the friend felt afterward. Ask caregivers to try a safe kindness act with their child and talk about it. Do not request children’s names, contact details, photographs or personal stories for submission.
